Castleton singer releases first debut single in tribute to best friend

Date published: 23 August 2021

A singer from Castleton has released her first debut single in a fitting tribute to her best friend.

34-year-old Rachel Kelly officially released her single ‘Dear Old Friend’ on 7 August, the fourth anniversary of her best friend Tommy (Tom) Nuttall’s death.

“We used to sing as a duo at pubs, clubs, carnivals, and other events, and it’s because of him that I got my confidence to get on stage,” said Rachel, who has had a passion for singing since she was four years old.

“When Tommy died it hit me really hard. We had fallen out over something stupid and never got the chance to make amends. So, I decided I would put what I wanted to say it in a song.”

Struggling to portray her feelings in writing, Rachel got in touch with Max Restaino in March to assist her with the lyrics and music for the song. Max, a musician himself, has previously toured with Steps.

Pete Troughton from Studio Studio in Whitworth then helped with the recording, mixing, and mastering of the track before its official release.

“The song is now available on all major download sites including Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and Deezer, or you can buy a physical copy from myself for £2," continued Rachel.

“Thank you to every single person who has streamed, downloaded, or bought my single, or left a lovely comment or message. I appreciate them all so much!

“And finally, thank you to the man himself, Tom, who told me time and time again that I was never allowed to give up, and gave me the support and courage I needed to get back on stage and stay there.”

Rachel is currently completing a song writing course and hopes to release more original music in future.
