GCSE results 2021: Whitworth High students achieve fantastic results

Date published: 12 August 2021

Students at Whitworth Community High School have achieved fantastic results in their GCSE exams this year.

Having spent six months in hospital in Year 10, Chloe Carroll was delighted to achieve grade 9s in seven of her GCSEs.

Along with the top grades for English literature and language, double science, geography, religious studies and sociology, for her health and social care she achieved a level 2 distinction, a grade 8 in maths and grade 7 in Spanish.

Chloe, 16, said: “After being in hospital, I had to catch up so I can't believe I managed to get seven grade 9s.

“I want to be a veterinary surgeon and will be studying at university. I have a rabbit at the moment and I am soon to be getting two white tree frogs; I already have the terrarium.”

She is looking to take mathematics, law and business A-levels at Rochdale Sixth Form but does not know what career she wants to pursue.

After a lengthy selection process, Shaun Stephen was successful in securing a place at Stonyhurst College where he will be taking an International Baccalaureate.

Shaun, 16, will be studying physics, economics and business, along with other subjects, and the coursework and exam assessed two-year course will lead to the equivalent of four A-levels.

He first visited the school two years ago and was awarded the place after undertaking a variety of online tests and interviews, including one with the headteacher.

In the long-term, he hopes to have a career in engineering and may be looking at an apprenticeship in a major organisation like BA Systems.

Shaun said: “My first impression of Stonyhurst was that the facilities were phenomenal and there was so much history.

“My time at Whitworth has been great and I have had great support from the teachers, they have always been there to help.”

His mum Kay added: “The teachers have not just been there for Shaun but also for the parents as well. Whenever you have a question or a query they have always been very supportive.”

Shaun achieved grade 7s in English literature and language and mathematics, four other GCSEs and a level 2 distinction star in business and enterprise.

A law career is on the cards for Eve Butterworth-Bennion, 16, after she picked up six top grade 9s in English literature and language, sociology, religious studies, science and design technology along with four other grade 8s.

She said: “I hope to go to university and although I do not know what career I want to do it will be something to do with law.

“School has been really good and I have really enjoyed it. I am really chuffed with my results; they are better than I thought I would get.”

Eve will be taking A-levels in English, law and sociology at Rochdale Sixth Form.

A forensic science career is on its way for Rhiannon Fenwick after she achieved excellent GCSE results at Whitworth Community High School.

Rhiannon, 16, said: “I got grade 9s in English literature and language, science and religious studies, five grade 8s and a grade 7 in Spanish. I am so shocked about Spanish because I didn't think I would pass it.

“I will be doing A-levels in maths, biology and chemistry at Rochdale Sixth Form.

“Forensic science has always interested me because I like the idea of finding answers from evidence. It has been really good at Whitworth and I will really miss everyone.”

She said: “I am going to Burnley College where I will be studying A-levels in sociology, politics and classical civilisation and then I want to do a degree in sociology.”

Lucas wants to work with adults with mental health issues and learning disabilities, and is considering a later combined degree in learning disabilities, nursing and social work.

His mum, Joanne, said: “I’m totally proud of how he’s put a lot of effort in and worked hard with virtual lessons, which hasn’t always been easy with a six-year-old at home.

“When he was at school, Lucas was a valued member, being a senior prefect, and he’s always had a passion to help others.”
