Castleton Classic Car & Bike Show returns to Mayfield

Date published: 11 August 2021

The Castleton Classic Car and Bike show made a return to Mayfield Sports Centre on Sunday (9 August), despite the horrendous weather conditions.

There had been around 180 cars and bikes booked in to exhibit at the show, organised by the Heywood and District Old Wheels Group, but due to the torrential downpours which persisted throughout the day, a lot of them cancelled, leaving the final number of entrants at just over 50.

The public enjoyed the day and loved having a look at the high standards of vehicle, which included Rolls Royce, a 1947 Bentley, Jaguars, a 1952 2L Triumph, Capris, Minis and MGs.

Due to the reduced numbers, it was decided there would be no best in class or show, it was deemed that everyone who turned up on the day were winners.

Organiser Tony Vose, of the Heywood and District Old Wheels Group, said: “We spent a lot of time talking to the exhibitors and lots of them commented on the great mix of different vehicles and that the show had a really nice friendly and welcoming feel about it.

“Thank you to all that helped to make the event the best we could. Thank you to Mayfield for hosting the event, kitchen staff Emma and Tilly and thank you to Pete Duffy, whose help was invaluable.

"I would like to also thank our members, especially Jeff Yates and Graham Cummings who designed and administrated our application system from scratch to enable us to arrange the event in just a few weeks, and also their very important input in arranging the vehicles on the day of the event."

Tony was asked repeatedly throughout the day if another show would be held later in the year to give other exhibitors another chance to enter.

Addressing this, he said: “We will hold discussions with our members who assisted on the day and the Mayfield Rugby Club, to see what we can come up with.

“If we can arrange another date it will be widely publicised in good time for the event.”

The first Castleton Classic Car and Bike Show took place in 2019, whilst the 2020 event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
