Friends group set out plans to spruce up Syke and Cronkeyshaw

Date published: 10 July 2021

The Friends of Syke and Cronkeyshaw (FOSAC) have had a busy few months since their incorporation in March.

Formed to promote, protect, and enhance green spaces in Syke and Cronkeyshaw, the group was founded when 10 residents, supported by two ward councillors, came together to discuss ways of maintaining and enhancing the natural beauty of the area.

Since then, the Friends have chosen a new logo and began work on some exciting new projects.

FOSAC held a competition where they asked local children to design a new logo for the group. The winner was Amelia Newbury of the 40th Rochdale Scout Group.

Chair of FOSAC, Tricia Ayrton, presented Amelia with a £10 voucher prize.

Tricia said: “I am very thankful to all the children for coming up with some brilliant designs. It was so hard to choose.

“Well done to Amelia for coming up with an outstanding logo, which we are proud to have."

The old spiral sandpit on Syke Common is a project the group are keen to work on, eventually turning it into a community herb garden.

Rochdale Council Environmental Management has agreed to clear the pit and fill it with fresh topsoil before the Friends dig deep and plant the herbs in autumn.
