Community gardening celebrated at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park

Date published: 04 July 2021

Community gardening and having access to green space has never been so important and is being celebrated at this year’s RHS Flower Show Tatton Park between 21-25 July.

The Petrus PIER – Petrus Incredible Edible Rochdale – team are heading back to Tatton to exhibit their new back-to-back garden, ‘Full Circle’, this July, one of a number of community groups creating gardens at this year’s show.

Petrus’ Rachael Bennion, in partnership with service users and volunteers at the charity, has co-designed the Petrus: Full Circle garden to highlight the impact flooding has had in the area, demonstrating what gardeners and the community can do to work with water and increase flood resilience.

The garden features a rain garden system that collects water from a living roof and channels it into a large pond at the bottom of the garden with plants that are commonly seen in areas prone to flash flooding such as crocosmia, geranium and phormium.

At the 2019 Tatton Park show, Petrus service users and volunteers won both the Silver Medal and the People’s Choice Award for their 'Petrus’ Paradise' garden designed by service users, volunteers and staff which reflected a service user's journey through life with Petrus.

The experience was extremely positive and saw the group work together to overcome the challenges that they have faced through experiencing homelessness to give back to the community and take on the incredible task to exhibit at such a major event.

RHS Flower Show Tatton Park will run from 21–25 July.
