Springhill Hospice presented with £3,000 cheque after veterans' football clash

Date published: 26 June 2021

A cheque for more than £3,000 has been presented to Springhill Hospice after the funds were raised from a charity football match.

The cheque for £3,113.39 was presented to the hospice on Wednesday (23 June) by members of Rochdale AFC Military Vets, who faced their Oldham Athletic counterparts at Rochdale Mayfield earlier this month.

Rochdale won the game 6-3, courtesy of a hat-trick from Adam Trennery, two by Cam Pomroy and one from Wayne Traynor.

Established in February 2020 by Adam Trennery, a former Royal Navy Weapons Engineer, the Rochdale AFC veterans team provides military veterans with an opportunity to get together on a weekly basis with like-minded individuals, keep physically and mentally active, all whilst bonding over a mutual love for the beautiful game.

Adam said: "I am so grateful for everyone who turned up on the day to help raise so much funds for a great cause. I would like to thank Oldham Athletic Military Veterans and Isaac Keast for agreeing to play us.

"I would also like to thank our sponsor John at Bluebird Care Rochdale and all the kind local businesses who donated prizes for our raffle. Big mention to Dave Sweetmore who kindly did the tannoy system and Rochdale AFC Community Trust for helping man the kids' entertainment and collecting gate fees, also Mayfield Sports Centre especially Paul the groundman who was absolutely amazing in making the facility one to remember.

"I have always wanted to do something for charity, and what better local charity than Springhill Hospice, who have touched many peoples lives in the Rochdale area, I am hoping I can do a lot more charity work with them in the future and help out the local community as much as possible."

Springhill Hospice relies on donations to raise in excess of £3.2m every year – or £8,928 per day – to provide its vital services.

Barbara Lloyd, Community Support Fundraiser said: “We met members of Rochdale AFC Military Veterans at the Hospice so that we could celebrate their fantastic achievement of raising over £3,113 from their recent charity football match versus Oldham Military Veterans.

“To have raised this huge amount is an amazing achievement. The commitment from everyone at Rochdale Military Veterans, players and supporters, has been fantastic and so very generous, and we particularly thank Adam Trennery, the event organiser, for all his hard work. The money raised will make a huge difference to our patients and families and the vital care they receive.”
