New electricity transformer being installed in Norden

Date published: 17 June 2021

A new electricity transformer is being installed at the National Grid substation on Clay Lane, Norden after being delivered last week.

Transformers step up or step down the voltage of electricity between different circuits and play a vital role in helping ensure the UK continues to enjoy safe and reliable electricity supplies.

The old one has reached the end of its lifecycle, after being installed in the 1970s. The new one is of similar size, but uses a biodegradable synthetic transformer fluid which is more environmentally friendly, compared to the traditional transformer mineral oil.

The National Grid has confirmed the transformer is "in the process" of being installed.

The new transformer has a greater longevity and will have an increased life span of around 50 years.

Speaking prior to its delivery, National Grid project manager, Richard Westwood, said: “Millions of people rely on us to supply their electricity without interruption, day in, day out, so it’s important that we keep our substations and the equipment in them working efficiently. The delivery of this transformer to our Rochdale site will ensure we are able to continue to deliver power reliably to the local area.”
