Rochdale’s parks, open spaces and horticultural services included on awards shortlist

Rochdale Borough Council has been shortlisted in the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Annual Service Awards 2021 for parks, open spaces and horticultural services for both best performer and most improved performer.

Finalists have been announced for the awards, which celebrates and recognises the best across the UK from more than 200 local authorities, with Rochdale chosen among only six authorities to reach the finals in this category.

The nomination reflects the hard work and dedication of the council teams and the many committed volunteers and local friends groups who take the time to help create numerous beautiful spaces we see across the borough.

Flower bed maintenance and bin provision were just a couple of categories awarded 100% alongside other top-ranking frontline services including playgrounds; countryside management; environmental practices; human resources and public satisfaction.

Councillor Neil Emmott, leader of the council, said: “What an outstanding achievement that our parks and open spaces have been recognised as ranking amongst the best in the UK at a time when we have all benefitted more than ever from our beautifully maintained green spaces.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved in dedicating time and effort to keeping our town centres, parks and open spaces clean and beautiful places for everyone to enjoy.”

Councillor Liam O’Rourke, cabinet member for environment and facilities, added: "As recently appointed cabinet member for the environment, it was wonderful to hear about this amazing news. I know how much our parks and open spaces, like Queen’s Park in my own ward have helped many of our residents throughout lockdown periods, providing space to catch a breath and get away from it all.

"Congratulations to all the teams and local volunteers involved and whatever the outcome; I’m sure I can say, we are all extremely proud of our borough.”

The awards will be announced at a special virtual ceremony to be held on 8 June 2021.
