Newhouse Academy Students choose Motor Neurone Disease Association to benefit from Tesco community grant

Over £1,000 has been given to the Motor Neurone Disease Association through a Tesco community grant after being nominated by students at Newhouse Academy.

Miss Wilson and Redgrave House applied for the scheme and nominated the Motor Neurone Disease Association to receive a £1,166 grant from green tokens collected by shoppers.

Miss Wilson said: “We are really happy that our charity donation may help improve care and support for people with MND, their families and carers.”

Motor neurone disease is a progressive illness which affects the brain and nerves in the spinal cord, the motor neurones. Messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching muscles, causing them to weaken, stiffen and waste. There are several types of motor neurone disease, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

There's no cure for MND, but there are treatments to help reduce the impact it has on a person's daily life.

It's nearly always fatal, but some people live with the condition for many years, such as the late physicist Stephen Hawking.

Tesco community grants support thousands of local community projects and good causes across the UK.
