Driver suspected to be 'under the influence' is 'detained by parents' after crashing into cars near Moorhouse Academy

A driver suspected to be under the influence of drink or drugs has been ‘detained by parents’ after crashing into cars near a primary school in Milnrow this morning (Wednesday 19 May).

The incident took place near Moorhouse Academy during the morning school run. Three vehicles were damaged but fortunately no-one was injured.

Parents intervened and detained the driver, according to the school’s headteacher, as children were 'quickly and safely' escorted into school.

Police subsequently arrested a 27 year old man on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, failing to stop, and assault.

The quick-thinking parents and staff have been thanked by headteacher Mrs Milnes for their 'swift action and good citizenship'.

A statement on the school’s website on behalf of Mrs Milnes said: “An incident outside Moorhouse Academy this morning has been safely managed by staff and parents.

“A car collided with a number of vehicles and whilst parents detained the driver, Academy staff controlled traffic and ensured that all children were quickly and safely escorted into the building.

“No pedestrians were hit by the vehicle and all the children are safe. Our thanks go to everyone in the Moorhouse community for their swift action and good citizenship.”

The North West Ambulance Service attended, but didn't take anyone to hospital, a spokesperson confirmed.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called just after 8.30am this morning to reports of a collision involving three vehicles on Rochdale Road in Milnrow.

"Officers and NWAS attended, and a 27 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, failing to stop, and assault. He remains in custody for questioning.

"Inquiries are ongoing."
