Volunteers needed for free charity book store at Better Together

Date published: 18 May 2021

Volunteers are needed to help launch the Global Educational Trust (GET Free Books) scheme in the new Better Together building at the former M&S on Yorkshire Street.

One of several charities occupying the space, The Global Educational Trust gives donated books another chance of life by providing these for free; the books that are offered may otherwise have been pulped or put into landfill.

Once open, customers are allowed a limited number of books per day. GET Free Books also accepts and provides audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and jigsaws.

A representative from GET Free Books said: “We have the shop, we have the books and now we need the community of Rochdale to come together to help us open the bookshop to provide free books to the community.

“Once we open, we let you have a limited amount of books per day and if you want to you can put a couple of coins in the pot, but you don't have to.

“We need volunteers for the bookshop and it does not matter how much time you have to give an hour, half a day or several days a week. Every hour counts.”

The Global Educational Trust was started nine years ago after its founder realised that children were going to school and unable to participate in Take a Book to School Day. He also realised that lots of preloved books were ending up in landfill instead of being recycled because of the glue in their spines.
