Am Dram stalwart given honorary role, after over 40 years' service to her local theatre group

Eileen Farrington, who recently turned 80, has been made Honorary Vice President of Whitworth Amateur Musical and Dramatic Society (WAMDS), after more than 40 years of dedicated service to the group.

Eileen first appeared on stage in 1978 when she was encouraged to get involved by friend and WAMDS committee member Anita Farrow. She first appeared in their production of The King and I, alongside her three children, Debbie, Andrew and Amanda, before taking part in subsequent productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Bye Bye Birdie.

Three of Eileen’s grandchildren have also become involved, treading the boards in more recent productions of Hairspray, Oliver! and We Will Rock You.

In 1980 she became the society secretary, a role which she stayed in for 20 years before taking over as ticket secretary for another two decades. During this time, she helped to facilitate over 80 musicals, plays and pantomimes, helping both front of house and backstage as well as with the society finances.

Eileen said: “WAMDS has been a very big part of my life, particularly with the children and grandchildren being involved. It’s my main outlet and hobby and I’ve got a real love for it.”

When she was told that the role of Honorary Vice President had been created for her, she was 'gobsmacked' and felt 'absolutely honoured'.

Anita Farrow, Honorary President and founding member of WAMDS who originally joined the group in 1963 during their debut production of Rio Rita, said: “It’s absolutely wonderful to see an old friend be given this role. She’s been an asset to the society. It’s not an easy job but she’s always been hardworking and trustworthy, an absolute gem.”

Society chair Andy Kelly added: “As soon as we open up, I know Eileen will be back, doing everything she can for the society. We certainly haven’t seen the last of her.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, WAMDS has been unable to put on a show since their production of Cinderella in early 2020. But they are planning to return to their usual schedule by staging their main musical of the year at the Curtain Theatre in Rochdale just as soon as restrictions allow for safe rehearsal and performance.
