Heywood teens cycle 500km for charity

Date published: 21 March 2021

Two Heywood teenagers are aiming to raise £2,000 for the Planet Mercy charity by cycling 500km.

Liam Hughes, 14, and Jack Smithies, 14, originally set out to cycle 300km in 20 days, but after smashing their target, have upped it to 500km.

Last year, Liam raised almost £1,000 for the charity with a 300km bike ride over the summer.

Their crowdfunding page says they wanted to take on the challenge to improve their fitness and maintain good mental health whilst giving back to the local community.

Planet Mercy is a registered UK charity, under the umbrella organisation of Madina Institute UK. The organisation began in 2009, working in the Oldham and Rochdale areas.

Since the start of the pandemic, Planet Mercy has delivered thousands of food parcels to families in need, as well as financially assisting other families.
