Rail Safety awareness livestream will broadcast into schools this month

Date published: 13 March 2021

Network Rail will host a Rail Safety Live broadcast into secondary schools on Thursday 18 March to discuss the topic of ‘THINKING AHEAD’.

Suitable for ages 11 and upwards, the livestream will start at 10am and last for 40 minutes, ensuring everyone understands the real-life dangers both on and near local railways, with a live chat option also available for questions and comments.

Community Safety Manger covering the North West route at Network Rail, Chris McLaughlin said: “Both Castleton and Rochdale stations are high up on our hotspot data for trespass incidents, so I’m making a concerted effort to improve awareness of these issues in the local area.

“With the roadmap now in place to start opening schools, social venues, and sporting activities, it’s especially important that we are able to make certain everyone is aware of the real dangers on and near the railway.

“With that in mind, our live broadcast will talk about how to keep yourself safe near the railway, we will hear from Avanti about safety in stations and on-board trains, as well as hearing about the far-reaching impact of someone’s decision to trespass. We will also be talking about how you could play a part in keeping the railway safe and much more, with information also given on our apprentice scheme.

“The live chat is always open, so feel free to leave us a question or comment and we will get it forwarded to the panel in advance of the broadcast.”

Network Rail recently reminded drivers to be vigilant when travelling near level crossings in the borough as ‘there are still too many incidents and near misses every year’.
