Pennine Acute hospitals to be legally transferred to Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust

Date published: 09 February 2021

The hospitals that make up the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust (PAT) are to be transferred to the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the Northern Care Alliance Group, on 1 April 2021.

Since its formation in April 2002, Pennine Acute has run four hospitals – The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary, Fairfield General Hospital in Bury and North Manchester General Hospital.

However, with the formation of the Northern Care Alliance in 2017 – a merger between the Pennine Acute and Salford Royal trusts – Pennine’s sites and services were split.

The process was originally expected to be completed by the end of March 2020.

The Rochdale, Bury and Oldham sites and services of the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust will be legally acquired by Salford, whilst North Manchester General Hospital will legally become part of Manchester University’s Trust. Since 1 April 2020, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has been responsible for managing services at North Manchester General Hospital, as part of its group and plans for a single hospital service for the city of Manchester and Trafford.

In preparation for these plans coming into effect on 1 April 2021, interim management agreements were put in place for all PAT sites and services earlier this year.

Bury Care Organisation, Rochdale Care Organisation, Oldham Care Organisation, Diagnostics & Pharmacy and the majority of Corporate Services have continued to be managed by Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group.

These interim management arrangements will remain in place until the formal PAT Transactions are completed on 1 April 2021.

Once Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trusts legally acquire their respective sites, the Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust will be formally dissolved.
