Christmas trees collected by Springhill Hospice recycled for mulch on its grounds

Date published: 16 January 2021

The very first Springhill Hospice Christmas tree collection was a huge success – resulting in collected trees being chipped up for mulch at the hospice.

In a new collection organised by Rebekah Cheshire, Springhill’s Events and Campaigns Fundraiser, real Christmas trees were donated from across the borough, contributing towards patient care at the hospice.

The trees were chipped up at Springhill, with the resulting mulch to be used on its award-winning grounds, part of the Rochdale In Bloom initiative, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.

Christmas trees – including that of Rochdale Mayor Councillor Billy Sheerin – were collected by Man of Rochdale Paul Ellison and the Special Branch tree surgeons.

A spokesperson for the hospice said: “Our very first Christmas tree collection has been a great success. A huge thank you to everyone who booked their tree in for collection. Your donation has contributed to patient care at Springhill. We’d also like to say a huge thank you to our tree collection team, including Paul Ellison and the Special Branch tree surgeons for volunteering their time and services to raise funds.”

Rebekah added: “It’s always so lovely to see our local community come together to support the hospice in whatever way they can. The funds raised from our tree recycling scheme will support the provision of care at hospice. It’s also a nice added bonus that the tree chippings have been recycled within the hospice gardens.”

Mr Ellison added: “It was fantastic to be involved in the first Christmas tree collection for Springhill Hospice. It’s a win-win for everyone as it raises vital funds whilst recycling your tree.

“Thank you to everyone who donated, and thank you Special Branch for your services.”

Mayor Sheerin said: “This is a great idea. I usually use the council recycling station but felt I had to support the main recipient of the Mayor’s charity.”
