Blankets donated to Petrus

Date published: 30 December 2020

This year, local councillor Faisal Rana and his wife, Iram, have once again donated 50 new blankets to local homelessness charity Petrus.

Councillor Rana said: "None of us like the cold and rain in winter. But think what it must be like if you've got nowhere to call home. That's why Iram and myself like to do a little something to help the homeless.

"It's a scandal that we have people forced to live on the streets in the fifth richest country on earth. Much more needs to be done to tackle homelessness and many of the underlying problems that lay behind it, such as mental health, domestic abuse and addiction to drink and drugs.

"Until then, we have to rely on charities like Petrus who step in because the government won't. They do a fantastic job in caring for rough sleepers and helping them get back on track.

"At the outbreak of the Coronavirus epidemic, the government provided resources to every council to allow them to get the homeless off the streets and in to temporary accommodation. So, if there is a will, you can do it. But that support is now being scaled back.

Edmund Clout from Petrus said: "A big thank you to Councillor Rana and his wife for their continued support.

"They've donated blankets and hats to our Hub for the third year running."

Iram said: "This time of year is a time for giving and Faisal and I always try to give something back by helping Petrus.

"They provide lots of services and shelter so every donation is vital to help them keep going. I hope our small donation will offer a little warmth and comfort during these difficult times."
