Christmas tree spruces up Spotland Bridge

Date published: 16 December 2020

A community Christmas tree has been installed in Spotland for the first time.

Initially planned for December 2021, Councillor Rachel Massey requested that the installation of the tree be brought forward to bring some cheer to this festive season.

She said: “2020 has been a dark year and I’m hoping that this tree can spread some light and Christmas joy to our community here in Spotland & Falinge ward, and for the thousands of residents that pass by the bridge every day.”

The Nordmann fir Christmas tree has been funded by the Spotland & Falinge Area Forum, Rochdale Township and ward councillors. The installation includes a tree sleeve and electrical connection that can be used each year, and it is hoped that local businesses will get involved to sponsor the tree and lights.

Councillor Massey added: “This tree is a celebration of community, and our local community has been fantastic this year, pulling together to support each other through this challenging time. It’s a shame that we can’t celebrate the Christmas lights switch on this time, but there is hope that we can all get together and hold a brilliant event in 2021.

“It’s been wonderful to see this tree already bringing a smile to the face of passing children and families, and it’s been tremendous to receive so many positive comments about the Christmas tree, and the area in general.

“I’m incredibly grateful to all at Rochdale Council who have gone above and beyond to get this tree up a year early, especially Val White the Township Manager, Tracy Hibbert from Environmental Management and John McAuley from Street Lighting, who have all been amazing to deliver this project before Christmas.”
