GEM Appeal to host its annual Christmas Cracker virtually

Date published: 17 December 2020

Following the success of the virtual Strawberry Sparkle event in August, The GEM Appeal are bringing their virtual Christmas Cracker to you this weekend.

To be hosted on Saturday 19 December from 4.30pm, the local charity is inviting the public to join them via Zoom to celebrate the festive season.

The event will include Christmas music, appearances from Pantoland, Christmas recipes from Browns Cakes, a festive quiz and lots of Christmas cheer, plus more, with some very special guests making a surprise appearance.

The GEM Appeal charity was founded in 1994 after founder Karen Johnson’s sons, Simon and Mikey, were diagnosed with Hunter Syndrome. Both boys lost their lives to the incurable disease at the age of 12, but their names live on in the Willink Unit laboratory at Manchester Children’s Hospital, of which The GEM Appeal (‘Genetics. Enzymes. Metabolics.’) fundraises for to fund research and find cures for genetic diseases.

GEM Appeal trustee Wendy Mills said: "This year hasn't been anything like a normal year of fundraising for The GEM Appeal; all the planned events have been cancelled or rescheduled and it has been a really tough year for everybody. However, this has not deterred the GEM Appeal from trying new ways of raising money for research and treatment for children with genetic diseases.

“We are holding a virtual Christmas Cracker event on Saturday 19 December to spread some Christmas cheer and to create more awareness of the charity.

“It will be a festive get together with seasonal entertainment and a few surprises.

”Stay safe and happy Christmas from all The GEM Appeal team. Hopefully 2021 will be a fantastic year.”

The virtual Christmas Cracker is a free event being held online. For further information and essential registration, please contact The GEM Appeal via email - gemappeal@gmail.com.

The registration confirmation will include seasonal recipes from Brown's Cakes and there will be an opportunity to display your creations from the recipes online on the day, with a chance to win a prize.
