Independent opticians come to the rescue of Rochdale man experiencing a retinal tear

Date published: 12 December 2020

An independent opticians has helped to save the sight of man from Rochdale, after his usual opticians were unable to see him.

Peter Megson, a 40-year-old former intensive care nurse from Rochdale, was experiencing a sudden onset of floaters in his vision, which turned out to be a retinal tear.

Specialists told Peter that his retinal tear could have led to sight loss, if it was not treated in time.

After his usual opticians could not see him, Paul Cheetham Eyecare in Rochdale came to Peter’s rescue and were able to accommodate him into their clinic the same day after realising the symptoms could present a serious eye health condition.

Principal medical optometrist Faheem Sarfraz found that Peter was experiencing a retinal tear and inflammation of his optic discs which can represent a sign of a serious systemic condition.

Faheem immediately referred Peter to Rochdale Infirmary where he was treated the same day, receiving laser treatment to rectify the issue, later being transferred to Altrincham Eye Hospital for follow-up care.

Now on the road to recovery following treatment, Peter has paid tribute to the care he received when he needed it.

Peter said: “Whilst I had my suspicions it was the case when I was seeing the floaters, I was still horrified when Faheem told me that I had a retinal tear and he was referring me to hospital.

“If someone in my position and experiencing what I was, I would say definitely get it checked. I never realised how important it was to get any issue with my eyes seen to.

“I sent Faheem a card and flowers to say thank you for his treatment, as well as to Rochdale Infirmary and Altrincham Eye Hospital. I wouldn’t have known what to do if I wasn’t seen that day.”

Optometrist Faheem Sarfraz said: “Whilst retinal detachments can get more common the older you get, Peter’s case shows that eye problems can affect people at any age, and it’s important to get checked if you notice any change to your vision, even if it is something as seemingly minor as floaters.

“It goes to highlight how crucial it is that opticians have stayed open for these sorts of appointments throughout the year, as it means we can continue to support the NHS by reducing the burden on them.

“Eye examinations are open to all who need access to eyecare, as it was through the second lockdown and now as we return to the tiered system. We have all the suitable measures in place, like medical PPE and regular sanitisation of all frames and touchpoints, to ensure a safe environment in practice.”

The practice has stressed that eye examinations are by appointment only and all patients must wear a suitable face covering at all times.
