Castleton's Christmas tree replaced

Date published: 02 December 2020

After much complaint, the sprawling Castleton Christmas tree has been replaced.

The original tree – dubbed ‘evil’ by Castleton councillor and mayor, Billy Sheerin due to its long, sprawling branches – was replaced by a neater and more compact fir better suited for decoration.

The Mayor joked: “The 'evil' tree had long arms which could have attacked passersby and dragged them in, never to be seen again.”

He added: “Big thanks to our environmental management for changing it as we now have a beautiful, proper, Christmas tree with new lights.”

A spokesperson for Rochdale Borough Council said:  "A new Christmas tree was installed in Castleton on 25 November, replacing the original which wasn't suitable. Lights were fitted the following day."
