Ways you can still support Springhill Hospice from home during the pandemic

Date published: 22 November 2020

Springhill Hospice provides specialist end of life care to individuals and their families living with a life-limiting illness across the borough of Rochdale.

Care at Springhill comes in many different shapes and sizes; it may be provided at Springhill Hospice’s purpose built In-Patient Unit or out in the community in a patient’s own home, in the form of psychological or bereavement support, or creative therapy sessions which have moved to online virtual sessions during the pandemic.

Springhill relies heavily on income from its charity shops and fundraising events to ensure that the services they provide remain free of charge to patients and their families.

With their charity shops temporarily closed and annual events cancelled, it is vital that the community continues to support Rochdale’s only hospice throughout these unprecedented times.

Emily Kennedy, Head of Income Generation and Marketing at Springhill Hospice, said: “Since the announcement of a second national lockdown we have received countless messages of support and concern, and we are so grateful for each and every one. The announcement meant that we have had to close our shops again, and that our planned fundraising activities face even more uncertainty.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support from our local community since the pandemic began, but we are calling on you again to help us through the coming weeks. We know that for so many, this is a time of financial uncertainty but if you are able to help, your support will mean so much to the families in our care.”

Springhill Hospice requires £3.2million a year – or £8,928 every day – to remain open. Here, we have listed a few ways you can still support Springhill Hospice from home.

Wear your Woollies to work, school, or at home

On Friday 11 December, Springhill are encouraging you to get your festive jumpers at the ready for the annual Wear Your Woollies Day. This event has now been expanded to include schools, nurseries, and social groups along with the businesses who are normally a part of it.

Simply sign up, request your fundraising resources (collection buckets, posters, etc) and then show off your woollies on 11 December. Donations of £2 per adult (and £1 per child) can be made via the hospice website on the day.

Light up a Life

Light up a Life helps you celebrate the memories of your nearest and dearest by dedicating a light on Springhill’s Light up a Life tree, whilst your donation will help patients and families who need hospice care this Christmas.

You will receive a personalised commemorative card to display in your home, bearing the name(s) of your loved one(s), and a dedication star which you can personalise with your own memory or message.

The Light up a Life virtual service will launch on Saturday 5 December at 6pm for the public to join. If you can’t make it, the service will be recorded and edited to be released on the Springhill Hospice website and social media.

Reindeer Run

Aimed at schools to get young kids involved in raising money for the hospice over the Christmas period.

Springhill’s Reindeer Run provides a fun activity for schools, nurseries and children's organised groups such as Cubs and Brownies. It is a festive celebration for children (and adults) to get involved in and enjoy - you choose the date, the activity (run, walk, stand or sit) and where and how it will be held. Springhill then send you a fundraising pack with reindeer antlers, activity sheets, and an adult Santa suit to help keep your reindeer group together, plus more.

Please contact the hospice at least four weeks before your chosen Reindeer Run date.

National and International Challenges

Springhill’s challenges page has recently launched and includes information for events taking place over the next couple of years, both nationally and internationally.

Fancy exploring Iceland’s mountains, a charity challenge trek in Nepal or a 6-day trip across Sahara Dunes? If not, you can stay more local, by taking part in a charity sky dive or completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks – all for Springhill Hospice.

Information on all upcoming challenges can be found here:

Christmas Tree Collection

Another new event taken on this year, recycle your tree this Christmas to make every moment count.

Springhill Hospice’s Christmas Tree Collection is the perfect way to recycle your real Christmas tree whilst raising vital funds for patient care. At the beginning of January, volunteers will work across the borough picking up your Christmas trees from your home all in return for a donation to the hospice.

All Christmas trees collected will then be recycled and used in our very own Hospice gardens as chippings for pathways and for our garden beds.
