No tricks, only treats: Brotherod community comes together to create special Halloween activities for children

Date published: 30 October 2020

As Halloween 2020 is shaping up to be a very different time of year, the Brotherod community has created a special scarecrow trail and goody bags for the children who would usually be out trick or treating.

Tarryn Jones, who set up the Brotherod Community In This Together social media group in April 2019, has organised goody bags and activities to help pass the time – including a scarecrow competition inspired by the one in Wardle.

Residents of Brotherod have been asked to create a create a scene for Halloween, with any kind of scarecrow.  Voting will be open over the weekend via Facebook – the one with the most ‘likes’ will be named the winner of the contest on Tuesday (3 November).

Tarryn has also asked residents to decorate their houses, earning points from a pre-made system based on the décor used, and has set up a Halloween trail, with residents displaying pictures in their windows or gardens. The children will collect a checklist and go on the hunt, making a note of each picture found.”

She explained: “We have a full community on 31 October and the streets are normally alive with children, but seeing as they can't trick or treat, I have sent out goody bags this week and set up a couple of activities.”

Tarryn continued: “I wanted my kids, and the kids around here, to have a community like when we were younger and help them realise no matter their age, they can still take part and have fun. I want to create a loyal, tight community, where people are proud to be part of it.

“I want to help these children build their future community and make lots of memories in the meantime. This way, they can still get out and do something fun for Halloween.”
