Visionary day as adult care promotes sensory services

Date published: 20 August 2019

Scores of people attended Rochdale Council's annual information and advice day for residents with sensory issues at Number One Riverside on Wednesday 14 August.

Attractions at the popular event included carers’ assessments, free hearing screenings and a range of specialist help and advice on all things sensory related.

There were stalls packed with information from partner organisations including Action for Blind, Blind Veterans, Action on Hearing Loss, NHS Audiology Team, Deafblind UK, NHS Eye clinic liaison officer, Guide Dogs, Community Connectors, British Wireless for the Blind, Fire Service and The Talking Newspaper.

Experts from the council’s sensory team were on hand throughout the day to answer residents’ questions and showcase the range of adult care services provided by the council.

Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for adult care, said: “Our fantastic sensory team provide a comprehensive sensory service that ensures residents can access a range of free services throughout the year. These include a sign language support group, book clubs and much more. The day showed adult care at its best, working with partners to deliver a well-supported event, which underlined our Co-operative values and principles.”

Tracey Sheils, senior sensory intervention officer for the council, said: “It was great to see so many residents in attendance and a huge thanks to all our fantastic partner organisations who supported the day. Our service ensures residents with hearing, sight and speech problems are provided with help, support and advice throughout the year. The awareness day also underlines our commitment to delivering sensory services that help to improve the lives of residents across the borough.”

Adult care provides a range of sensory services and hold events, classes and support sessions throughout the year. For more information contact the sensory team on 0300 303 8886 or visit:
