Whitworth enters North West in Bloom contest

Date published: 22 June 2019

For the first time ever this year, Whitworth is entering the North West in Bloom competition.

There are many areas in Whitworth that are already well-maintained by local residents or community groups, such as the planters along Market Street and the Memorial Gardens but, to encourage civic pride and engender an interest in all aspects of the environment, teams of volunteers have been busy planting flowers and generally tidying up certain corners of the town.

These volunteers have ranged from the girl guides and scouts to retired residents with one thing in common: to help establish a long-term plan to improve the local area, not just for the residents, but also for visitors and those passing through.

Roy Down, from Rochdale In Bloom, said: “The enthusiasm of the Whitworth In Bloom committee is unbelievable. They only started in March, one day before the entry deadline. Since then, they have really rolled their sleeves up and got going.

“A special mention must go to Melanie Hearn, Whitworth's Town Clerk, who is the driving force behind the In Bloom team. She has been inspirational in getting Whitworth blooming.”

He added: “I am sure the public of Whitworth will appreciate all the effort that is going on to make the township look really good for judging day in July.

“The committee is really friendly and welcoming, if any residents want to get involved, they can get in touch via the Facebook page, Whitworth in Bloom.”

To help kick-start the campaign, Whitworth Town Council has organised a competition for residents to show off their gardens or green spaces with a special emphasis on innovative designs, awareness of the environment and general sustainability.

So now the seeds have been planted, this is just the start of what will be something to flourish year on year. Watch this space – literally.
