Rochdale in Bloom World War One Memorial Garden to be relocated next to memorial gardens

Date published: 18 February 2019

The World War One pop-up garden in Rochdale centre is set to be relocated in the coming weeks, making way for a new feature ahead of the anticipated arrival of Dippy the dinosaur next year.

Work will soon begin with Paul Ellison of Rochdale in Bloom, H Bell & Sons, Rochdale Borough Council and other Rochdale in Bloom sponsors moving the thoughtful tribute to a very fitting permanent home over the next few months.

Designed as a commemorative World War One centenary tribute, the garden will be moved yards away to its new home between the Rochdale Memorial Gardens and playground, and the former Magistrates’ Court on The Esplanade.

The memorial garden was awarded Best Feature in a Public Place at the regional North West in Bloom awards ceremony in Southport in November 2018.

Based on 100 years’ celebration since the end of World War One, the garden includes engraved poems, benches, soldier silhouettes, a picture frame aimed towards our great cenotaph and a fantastic floral display, including poppies and other symbolic plants.

The moving of the garden means the space near the Gracie Fields status will now be free for a new feature to coincide with the dinosaur’s visit to Rochdale in 2020.

Dippy, a 21m-long plaster-of-Paris cast of a Diplodocus carnegii skeleton, is known to millions from its usual home in the Natural History Museum.

Rochdale is set to be its only North West stop as the Natural History Museum’s world-famous exhibit tours eight different venues across the country.

Number One Riverside was selected as the preferred location in the region following a competitive bidding process, which saw more than 90 venues from across the country bid to host the famous dinosaur.
