Remembrance Day marks centenary of First World War - events to be held across the borough

Date published: 17 October 2018

Residents across the borough will have the chance to pay their respects to those who have made sacrifices in defence of the country at this year’s Remembrance Day Services.

Commemorations will be held on Remembrance Sunday (11 November), with seven parades across the borough. The day will mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

Representatives from the Navy, Army and Royal Air Force will join veterans and civic dignitaries for the parades, which will take place in Rochdale, Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton, Norden, Milnrow and Wardle.  The crew of HMS Middleton will be parading in Middleton on the day and providing a guard of honour at the memorial.

Members of the public are invited to attend to show their gratitude to servicemen and women.

The Mayor, Councillor Mohammed Zaman, said we must remind ourselves that sacrifices continue to be made today by British Armed Forces and remember those who have fallen and continue to fall in other conflicts.

He said: “Remembrance Sunday coincides with Armistice Day this year and once again we pay homage to those fallen in all wars and thank them for the peace we have today. We remember those who served in the British Empire and fought alongside Britain, giving their lives in the hope for a better future for us.

"We should take this time to remember all those affected by wars, the millions who have lost their lives, war veterans and their families. They will never be forgotten.”

From now until 11 November, the Royal British Legion will hold its annual poppy appeal, which raises money to support British servicemen and women and their families. Poppies can be bought at Rochdale Town Hall, Number One Riverside, online at www.britishlegion.org.uk and from shops, supermarkets, pubs and many other locations across the borough.

Councillor Janet Emsley, lead member for the armed forces said she expects that residents will come out again in numbers to pay their respects: “One hundred years since the end of the First World War is a poignant reminder to us all and Remembrance Sunday is the day when the borough joins with others across the world to pay tribute.  It is heartwarming to see people wearing their poppy with pride and to know that thousands as always will attend the local services.”

Every Thursday from 9am – 10am the council hosts a Veterans’ Breakfast Club in the Clock Tower Dining Room at Rochdale Town hall, alongside with the council’s armed forces partners. All ex-military and dependents are welcome.
