Whitworth Spanish students ready to take on Rochdale’s finest

Date published: 25 June 2018

Spanish students Carys Scott and Sam Wellington took on the best of Whitworth Community High School’s Year 7 linguists and won.

The Spanish Spelling Bee saw students initially given 50 words to learn and the best spellers went into the final when they had to master 100 words.

Carys, 12, was the winner by pronouncing and spelling correctly 27 Spanish words within 90 seconds while Sam, also 12, was second with 24.

Modern Foreign Languages teacher Mel Mulherin selected words at random to test the students and if they were struggling they could ‘pass’ on a word.

They have done so well they have been given a further 50 words to master.

The whole year group will now go to Oulder Hill when they will face another 10 schools from Rochdale and all will have to learn 150 words.

Sam said: “I didn’t initially put my name down, a friend did, but now I have worked to learn the words it has made me more interested in the language.”
