An award ceremony and farewell took place on Monday 2 October in honour of Deeplish Community Centre’s popular Transport Manager, Mohammed Sarwar Alam, who is taking up a new role as a police constable with Greater Manchester Police.

During his role as Transport Manager at Deeplish Community Centre, Mr Alam supported a variety of community transport projects – including procurement, design and fleet management – and also connected people with places.

Councillors and colleagues gathered to celebrate his hard work and success including Deputy Leader of Rochdale Borough Council and Deputy Mayor Councillor Mohammed Zaman, Councillor Alan Brett, and Manager of Deeplish Community Centre, Sohail Ahmad.

Deputy Mayor Zaman commented: “Mohammed Sarwar has been a very influential and supportive community member who has helped and supported many local people in community transport. He will be missed by many people and community members.

“It’s good to see Mohammed progressing from community transport to serve Greater Manchester Police. His community work skills will enable him to be more effective whilst safeguarding and protecting people whilst serving in the police force.

“He is already ahead of the game in serving people and communities in our neighbourhood. We wish him best of luck and great future ahead.”

Sohail Ahmad JP, manager of Deeplish Community Centre, said: “We have many memories of excellent community work projects delivered across the Greater Manchester with Sarwar and we are proud that we have delivered many successful projects supporting communities and neighbourhoods.

“In my view, he is an extremely true example of cohesion and diversity. We will miss him in his role as community worker and wish him well for his future work and career with Greater Manchester Police. His knowledge and experience of working in Greater Manchester whilst developing transport projects will also empower him to be more active and responsive to the demands and responsibilities in the police force.

“I am very proud to say that he has made a real difference whilst living and working in the Borough of Rochdale.”
