Reuse Littleborough sends shoes and uniforms to children who have none

Reuse Littleborough’s request for school uniforms has been hugely successful following an appeal by Rochdale Online on 13 July.

Through unwanted uniforms, the no-money charity will be able to help as many as 1,000 children into education in Mwanza.

Reuse Littleborough, entirely run by volunteers at Stevenson Square in Smallbridge, aim to reuse many everyday items that would otherwise end up in the bin.

Michael Bamford, who runs Reuse Littleborough, said: “The response has been so good it could be 1,000. Uniforms are still arriving and will go into our container to Mwanza at the end of the year. Education in Tanzania is now free for children up to the age of eleven, providing they have a school uniform.

“I’m absolutely overwhelmed and blown away by the response we had. Through Rochdale Online, we were able to reach even more caring people. Thank you so much to all who donated. The schools involved were brilliant; it’s amazing what you find in the lost property box. Lots of the teachers explained to the children why they were doing this, which is educating them too.

“I’m looking forward to working with them again on some other projects that have been suggested. We now have a full rail of donated clothes for the homeless at the magistrates’ court where I help in the soup kitchen on Thursdays.

“We also had an information stall at the Rush Bearing Festival in Littleborough at weekend, giving out leaflets and posters, talking to locals and answering questions. We still don’t ask anyone for money as we are a no-money charity. We can do this with the things that are no longer needed.”

The group accepts the following donations, amongst many other items:

• Baby and children's clothes.
• School clothing, including shirts, skirts, shorts, pants and black shoes.
• Toiletries, including toothbrushes, shampoo, wipes, cotton wool, buds.
• Medical items such as plasters, bandages, syringes, Calpol, thermometers, sanitary products.
• Children’s toys.
• Pre-school toys, books.
• Disabled equipment for children.
• Wheelchairs.
• Other clothing

White goods cannot be accepted.
