Planning permission granted for new houses on former Balderstone School site

Date published: 09 February 2017

Planning permission has been granted for 143 new homes  on the former Balderstone School site.

The houses, mainly two and three bedroom homes, are to be built by developer Gleesons.

Balderstone and Kirkholt Councillor Richard Farnell has welcomed the decision, he said: "These new homes are just what the area needs. They will be affordable starter homes, helping young families and first time buyers get a foot on the housing ladder.

"It is an excellent use of a brownfield site. It has been derelict since the old school was pulled down a couple of years ago and has been plagued by travellers.

"The houses will be built on the footprint of the old school buildings. The former school playing fields will be preserved and incorporated into the adjacent Balderstone Park, adding to a valued local amenity.

"Balderstone and Kirkholt is undergoing quite a remarkable transformation of late with all the new homes, shops, community hub and a new health centre about to start construction this year. The area has never seen so much activity."

Gleesons are already building on Hill Top Drive and at Rudyard Grove. They are a socially responsible bolder and employ local labour whenever possible.
