Inquest into Lance Corporal Scott Hetherington’s death opened

An inquest into the death of Lance Corporal Scott Hetherington opened on Thursday (26 January) in Oxfordshire.

Lance Corporal Hetherington, of the 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, died on Monday 2 January following an ‘incident’ in Taji, northwest of Baghdad, Iraq. The incident is ‘currently under investigation’ by the Ministry of Defence, although it is understood this was not as a result of enemy activity.

The inquest was opened at 1.30pm and the cause of death given as a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Lance Corporal Hetherington was identified by Major Nicholas Higgins.

A full military funeral for Lance Corporal Hetherington took place on Thursday at 12.30pm at All Saints and Martyrs Church in Middleton. He was buried at Boarshaw Cemetery.
