Work starts on Kirkholt redevelopment

Date published: 26 January 2017

Work has started on the £6.1m redevelopment of The Strand in Kirkholt, which will deliver new homes, shops and a community space.

The redevelopment is a partnership between Rochdale Borough Council and Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH), which will provide a new parade of shops and a community hub with a range of facilities. Sixteen new apartments for affordable rent, delivered in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), will also be provided as part of the scheme.

Greater Manchester based Bardsley Construction has been appointed to deliver the project, which has been designed by Triangle Architects.

Demolition work started on 9 January and it is anticipated that the project will be completed by summer 2018. By taking a phased approach, local shops and community facilities will remain available throughout the construction period.

The Strand redevelopment is part of a wider RBH regeneration programme for Kirkholt, which includes new flats for older residents under construction on Daventry Road, and the recently-completed new homes on Queens Drive.

Clare Tostevin, RBH Director of Communities, said: “This is a landmark development which will revitalise the heart of Kirkholt, providing a range of new facilities for the community together with high-quality new shops and homes.”

Councillor Richard Farnell, Leader of Rochdale Council, said: “This redevelopment is the latest example of all the exciting work that is going on all over Kirkholt. After seeing the plans for the Strand I am genuinely excited at what this offer will provide for residents. I’m convinced the much-needed housing for affordable rent, the new parade of shops and community hub this work will deliver will completely revitalise what was a tired-looking part of the estate.”

Ged Rooney, procurement director at Bardsley Construction, said: “Our long established and hard-earned reputation for the successful delivery of high quality residential and related developments on time and on budget in locations throughout the north of England is reflected by us securing this valued contract with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing.”
