NWAS rated ‘excellent’ for sustainability reporting

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) has received the top rating from the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) for its approach to sustainability set out in its latest annual report.

As well as being the only ambulance trust to be rated as ‘excellent’, the Trust has also been included in a list of best practice examples that will be used by the SDU to help advise other northern NHS trusts and CCGs on their sustainability reporting.

Paul Gilfoyle, the Trust’s lead for sustainability developments, said: “As an NHS organisation, we have an obligation to work in a way that has a positive effect on the communities that we serve. Sustainability in this respect means spending public money well and wisely, making efficient use of natural resources and promoting the building of healthy and resilient communities.”

Neil Maher, the Trust’s assistant director for service delivery support, added: “This is great news for the Trust, particularly as we continue to work towards our 2020 target of reducing carbon emissions by 28% (from a 2013 baseline), which is in-line with the wider NHS ambition.”

Each year the SDU review all commissioner and provider sustainability reports across the NHS and score them for how well they meet the sustainability reporting criteria.

The Unit works nationally across public health, healthcare and social care systems to help develop healthy, fair and sustainable approaches. It is jointly funded by, and accountable to, NHS England and Public Health England to ensure that the health and care system fulfils its potential as a leading sustainable and low carbon service.
