Anger at fly-tipping

Date published: 24 November 2016

A spate of fly-tipping incidents, including a fridge, a bath, office chairs, and assorted household waste being dumped across the borough, has angered residents.

Rubbish and diesel has also been spotted floating along the canal, near the Junction Inn at Castleton.

The diesel has been reported by Rochdale Online to The Canal and River Trust.

Resident Clive Maynock said: “It’s a disgusting mess; how are we supposed to get decent boat users to use our canal?”

Heywood Road in Castleton has also been affected, with large amounts of rubble, boxes and wooden pallets having been ditched behind some houses, including an ironic ‘cleaning in progress’ sign.

Two further incidents have also been reported in Middleton. One site on Limefield park car park has been left covered with office waste, including chairs, drawers and doors, with a second site, near St Gabriel’s Church on Greenhill Road seeing the appearance of a bath, blue waste bags, planks of wood and plastic bottles.

Large amounts of household waste, including recyclable items, were also dumped at a car park in Littleborough near the railway station and a large amount of waste left, including a fridge and assorted takeaway waste was dumped at a car park in Whitworth.

Residents have confirmed the removal of the waste in Whitworth, and at St Gabriel’s this morning (Thursday 24 November).

In 2014/15, fly-tipping across the Rochdale borough cost the taxpayer £201,967 pounds.

Both Rochdale and Rossendale Borough Councils have been contacted for comment.
