Were you in the Kirkholt Secondary Modern’s 1963 fifth year football team?

Date published: 04 August 2016

Trevor Stott is looking to get back in touch with some old school mates from Kirkholt Secondary Modern’s 1963 fifth year football team.

The Kirkholt team won the Rochdale Schools League trophy that year but lost out in the Rochdale Schools Cup final to Heybrook Secondary School.

Trevor recalled how he and his friends, who were photographed wearing their new light blue shirts before that cup final, lost at the last hurdle: “We played somewhere down in Castleton. Unfortunately, we won the league but we actually lost the cup final.

“We all lived in Kirkholt or around that area. There used to be a bit of a rivalry between Heybrook and Kirkholt, but they beat us 3-1 in the final. Our ‘manager’ was a PE teacher called Mr Widdup. John Moore (central) played for Rochdale Schoolboys and possibly for Rochdale Town.

“I just felt a bit nostalgic and was wondering what the others ended up doing, how their lives progressed, and whether they’re still living in Rochdale.”

Trevor now lives in Colwyn Bay, Wales, after he got a job as a lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Bangor University in 1974.

He retired just 12 years ago and still lives there, but explained how he still had fond memories of Rochdale, the town where he grew up as a child: “I have happy memories of Rochdale and I enjoyed school. I still support Rochdale AFC as well and I try to get up to Spotland a few times a season.

“They took me out of Rochdale, but they didn’t take Rochdale out of the boy!”

Now 68, Trevor has been married to Jennifer Child, also from Bamford, Rochdale, for 48 years.

Trevor was actually born in Dublin but brought up in Rochdale from a young age. He has one brother, Terry, who lives in Devon, and a cousin, Lorraine, who still lives in Rochdale.
