Explosion in Fairfield Road Middleton

Police were called to Fairfield Road in Middleton at 8.30pm on Monday 26 September 2005, following reports of an explosion.
When officers attended they discovered a Volvo car on fire. Fire Crews examined the vehicle and found that a gas cylinder was responsible for the explosion. Further examination uncovered a second gas cylinder in the car.
Approximately 27 local residents were evacuated while experts made the second cylinder safe.
The car was later removed and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
Fire investigation teams are working to establish the cause of the fire.
