International Musicians Lend Their Talents to Springhill Hospice

Date published: 27 June 2005

Internationally renowned musicians are to perform in a special one-off concert to raise funds for Springhill Hospice at St Mary on the Baum, St Mary’s Gate, Rochdale on Thursday 21 July.

Billed as an evening of ‘Best Loved Songs and Music’ the concert features tenor Martin Toal, Rochdale born soprano Kay Jordan and pianist Per Nielsen. Compere for the evening wilL be Rev. Canon David Finney.

Springhill Hospice Fundraising Manager, Ian Jenkins, said: “We are delighted that such illustrious musicians and soloists have agreed to take part in this concert. Martin is an old friend of the Hospice – his tutor was former Welsh National Opera lead tenor, and Hospice Patron, Jeffrey Lawton – and he has performed for us at our Last Night of the Proms concerts. Martin approached me to help the Hospice again and is bringing with him some fabulous talent”.

The concert will feature not only favourite songs from the classics and opera, but some of the most popular songs from the West End and Broadway musicals.

Martin Toal – of whom Chris de Burgh described as possessing “a phenomenal voice” – has performed at many of the top venues in the UK, including Old Trafford, where he sang the National Anthem before the England v Northern Ireland World Cup match in March of this year before a crowd of 67,000 and an international TV audience of millions. James Middleton, Secretary of Manchester Italian Festival, said, “He is, by a long way, the finest tenor we have ever used at the festival. We like his balance of classical opera, rousing Italian songs and music from the musicals”

Appearing alongside Martin will be Kay Jordan who has sung with the many national opera companies and choral societies, including Scottish Opera, Opera North and the Cambridge Handel Opera Group. Her performances have regularly received praise in the national press and ‘Opera’. She has also sung with the Halle Orchestra, the WNO Orchestra, and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, and has made appearances on BBC radio and  BBC  TV.

Tickets for the concert, which commences at 7.30pm, are available for £8.00 and £6.00 (conc) from Springhill Hospice Fundraising Office, 427 Oldham Road, Rochdale or by calling 01706 711144. As places are strictly limited, early booking is advised.
