Planning application for new homes on old Balderstone High School site

Date published: 04 April 2016

A planning application has been submitted for 15 four-bedroom and 25 three-bedroom detached houses along with 63 three-bedroom and 44 two-bedroom semi-detached houses on the site of the old Balderstone High School.

If permission is granted to the developers, Gleeson Homes, the homes will be built on the land on Queen Victoria Street, where Rochdale Boys’ Grammar School stood.

The site has been vacant since the school was demolished.

A spokesman from Gleeson Homes said: "The 147 houses on the former Balderstone School site will be the second housing development that we will be carrying out in Rochdale, the first being the Hilltop School site which we are starting very soon.

"With an estimated total development value of £50 million this represents a huge investment by Gleeson in Rochdale and the economic benefit that comes from employing local people and contractors and purchasing goods locally will be widespread.

"We are looking forward to starting the Balderstone School site as soon as possible and are currently recruiting apprentices both for here and at Hilltop and we will be glad to hear from any young people who wish to earn good money in the building industry."
