Easter runners get moving for charity

Date published: 26 March 2016

Easter charity runners picked up speed this morning (Saturday 26 March) at a special Easter charity event to raise money for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

The charity, in memory of local cricketer Tom Hardman, predicts a total of about £11,000 will be raised, from the sponsorship of the 160 runners who set off from Rochdale Cricket Club headed for Norden Cricket Club.

A whopping £11,500 was raised at last year's event, with a £10,000 total from the year before. The organisers are hoping for a similar amount this year.

Margaret Hardy, who helped organise the event, said: "We had about 160 runners in total which is really fantastic. It is for an exceptionally good cause which deserves all the attention it can get."

CRY works to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD) and supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD.

Margaret added: "I lost my son to an illness like this, so it is a cause which matters a great deal to me. I'm happy that we are able to raise so much money for such a needed cause."
