Could your newborn be part of the class of 2021?

Date published: 14 March 2016

Parents-to-be whose baby is due around 1 April are being asked if they and their newborns would like to be the face of a new era in health and social care in Greater Manchester.

The call comes a year after Greater Manchester signed the historic deal around health and care devolution - and ahead of 1 April when the region takes on full devolved responsibilities, which aim to bring the biggest and fastest improvements in health by 2021.

Expectant parents are being invited to join a steering group which would chart the experiences of both parents and babies across Greater Manchester. The feedback would be used to help with a key drive to make sure that all children across the region are given the best start and support possible - so that when they start primary school they are ready to learn.

Wendy Meredith, Greater Manchester's Director of Population Health, said: "It's imperative that we get all children off to the best start possible - as we know that this has major benefits for their long-term health and development. One of our key targets is to ensure that by 2021 far more children are classed as ready for school - which means socially and emotionally ready to learn.

"A sample group of parents who are using the health and social care system in real time is very useful to us. It's also chance to unite two life-changing events as a child is born - and as the health and social care system in Greater Manchester takes on a new lease of life too."
