Hopwood Hall Shows Off Top Basketball Team

Date published: 03 May 2005

The Hopwood Hall College Basketball Team have proved to be a  “credit to the college” according to teacher Dean Kimpton, when they did him proud twice over, winning the North West Basketball League 2nd Division, and the North West Play Off Final.

Hopwood Hall College on Rochdale Road, Middleton has the status of a ‘Centre for Excellence for Sports’, and runs sporting activities for all students, as part of an ‘Enrichment’ programme on Wednesday afternoons.

Students from all walks of life had come along to the enrichment afternoon to join the team, including A-level, business and Travel and Tourism students, some of which had not played basketball before hand.

Enrichment Co-ordinator Dean Kimpton was in high spirits about the team’s success: “All the lads were a credit to the college - the hosts Thornleigh College, and our opponents Bury Grammar school both commented on the sporting behaviour of our team.” He said. “The fact that we have such a cosmopolitan mix to the team - including three international students from China, and a Portugese Travel and Tourism student plus a lad from Oldham!, this illustrates the benefits that the Enrichment programme provides.

“Also, many of the team only started to play basketball for the first time since joining the college, making their achievements all the more amazing!”
