Liz McInnes is backing the campaign to stay in Europe

Date published: 23 February 2016

Liz McInnes, MP for Heywood and Middleton, is backing the campaign for Britain to remain in the European Union.

It was announced this week that the referendum on Britain’s future in the EU will be held on Thursday 23 June. Ms McInnes firmly believes that it is in Britain’s best interests to remain a part of the EU.

Ms McInnes said: "British people have benefited hugely from our membership of the EU.

"Thanks to the EU we enjoy 28 days paid leave a year, sickness rights, equal pay, maternity and parental leave, and equal rights for all employees whether part-time, temporary, agency, full-time or permanent.

"Being in the EU has meant cheaper flights and holidays abroad, capped mobile roaming charges, compensation and food for delayed or cancelled flights, has allowed British students to right to study at universities across the EU for less than it might cost here at home, and it gives anyone in Britain the right to live, work and retire anywhere in the EU and more than 1.2 million Brits are doing just that right now.

"As well as all those benefits to us as individuals, millions of British jobs are linked to our EU membership. Almost half of our total exports go to the EU and are worth more than £227 billion a year to the British economy.

"As a member of the EU we have a say in the laws which regulate trade and we are able to vote for rules which benefit our businesses and workers. If we left the EU, we would have no say whatsoever over the rules but we would have to abide by them if we wanted to continue to trade with Europe. 61% of small business exports currently go to the EU, and do so much more easily because we are a member state."

"I have no doubt whatsoever that it is in the best interests of British families, British workers and British businesses to remain a part of the European Union."
