Revised site access proposals for land off New Road housing development

Date published: 19 January 2016

Revised site access to the proposed housing development on land off New Road have recently been approved by TfGM, GMP, and Rochdale Borough Highways Department. The proposal involves the re-location of the existing New Road bus stop to opposite Dearnley Spiritualist Church.

StopRussellHomes spokesperson James Rothwell said: “Whilst it is to be welcomed that the revised plan now includes provision for a bus stop lay-by, albeit, one which is much smaller than the existing one, we are very concerned that the proposed new bus stop location is situated almost on top of the proposed site access road junction, and is in close proximity to the existing right turn filter onto Harwood Street.

“Our concern that this will not only create a potential road safety hazard, but also exacerbate traffic congestion during peak periods, is compounded by the fact that it is proposed that a new right turn filter is planned for vehicles turning right from New Road onto the site access road.

“This will mean that during peak periods it is anticipated that this will become a very busy junction on what is already a heavily congested single carriageway road.

"It is understood that the Planning Department’s consultation on the revised proposals is to be restricted to three households on New Road.

“In our view the revised proposals merit wider public consultation and local residents deserve to have an opportunity to review and comment on the proposals.”

Schematics detailing the revised proposals can be viewed in the attached files.
