Chamber award winner profile: Quat-Chem Ltd
Date published: 15 October 2015
Quat-Chem, a family owned manufacturer in Rochdale specialising in industrial biocidal chemicals and formulated hygiene products, has won both ‘Export Business of the Year’ and ‘High Growth Business of the Year’ in this year’s North West Chamber Awards.
Quat-Chem was established in 1996. The initial focus of the business was on the manufacture of an industrial biocide, Benzalkonium Chloride (BC), a raw material with an exceptionally wide range of industrial uses ranging from the manufacture of disinfectants, to corrosion inhibition in the oilfield sector. In addition to BC, which is supplied to industry, a number of innovative proprietary hygiene product ranges were also developed. These ranges have since provided substantial growth for the company, in providing ‘preventive hygiene solutions’ for industry sectors where hygiene is of critical importance. These industries include, dairy, poultry and livestock, food and beverage and healthcare.
Consequent to launching these ranges, Quat-Chem quickly acquired an international customer base and by 2011 had outgrown its modest plant in Oldham and relocated to larger, purpose built premises in Rochdale. Quat-Chem is now active in Europe, the Far East, South, Central and North America, Asia, Middle East and North Africa, with export sales accounting for the majority of annual turnover.
It is expected that the demand for Quat-Chem’s hygiene products for livestock farming and meat/food processing will continue to grow as imported foods are increasingly produced under European safety standards. Quat-Chem’s current focus is largely on its dairy range, as dairy industries worldwide are undergoing considerable growth to achieve self-sufficiency and meet increasing demands for milk and milk-based products.
Dr Rubinah Chowdhary, Scientific Director at Quat-Chem said: “We are extremely pleased to have achieved recognition in both categories of the North West Awards. Our team has worked with great skill and enthusiasm on a number of exciting new projects over the last 12 months, which has helped move the business forward. The Chamber Awards are a great recognition of our team’s efforts, dedication and hard work. Huge congratulations to the Quat-Chem team and as well to all of the other regional winners. We look forward to meeting you all at the national awards dinner.”
