No Age Limit on Business

Date published: 05 May 2004

60-year old Rochdale entrepreneur Pauline Riley wants to encourage older people to start their own business, and has set a fine example with her venture, Pro-Active, which offers chair-based exercises in the community.

Pauline graduated from Rochdale’s first New Entrepreneur Scholarship (NES) programme last summer. She provides chair-based exercises in residential homes, care homes, sheltered housing and community centres to promote flexibility, relaxation and freedom of movement. Set to music, her classes help people relieve stress and improve breathing, posture and mobility, as well as being stimulating and fun to do.

“NES helped me focus on my business plan and gave me an insight into networking,” says Pauline. “I also had lots of support from Women in Enterprise in Rochdale.”

Pauline has many years’ experience working in social care and recently won a contract with Rochdale Council’s Healthy Living Initiative teaching a wide range of people. She really enjoys her new business: “It gives me a lot of pleasure seeing people develop their skills and enjoy improved movement and increased self confidence. I hope my example encourages others – after all, there is no age limit on the NES course or for starting your own business!”
