BPW Rochdale - More than just a network!
Date published: 25 October 2003
Women's networks have now become more commonplace, however BPW UK, an organisation for working women, is more than just a network. BPW Rochdale is one of the largest clubs in the UK with 50 members from around the area. Meeting at the Norton Grange Hotel every second and fourth Wednesday, the club has a varied programme of social events and speakers and is particularly active on issues of concern to women.
Whilst offering social and business networking opportunities locally, nationally and internationally, BPW is also a non - party political lobbying organisation seeking to influence policy decisions at local, national and international levels. BPW Rochdale's recent motions on drug rape, home-working and prostitution have all become part of the organisation's national lobbying mandate.
Through membership of the organisation, women have the opportunity to make their voices heard on issues of importance to them. Over the past few years, subjects such as treatment for endometriosis, pensions and flexible working practices have been under discussion at the organisations' national conference.
Although BPW stands for Business and Professional Women UK, BPW members come from a variety of careers and professions. BPW Rochdale members include secretaries, administrators, NHS employees, a dentist and many other careers. They all have something in common in common though - an interest in developing themselves and in helping other women. Enjoying themselves is also high on the agenda and the organisation's social side can provide a new circle of friends wherever you are in the country. Members from all around the UK meet each year at BPW's annual conference to hear high profile speakers such as Kate Adie, Dame Stella Rimmington, Dame Shirley Williams and Helena Kennedy QC; to discuss current issues of interest to women and to enjoy themselves with friends old and new.
One of BPW's aims is to encourage women to take up public appointments and the organisation provides information and training to help members to apply for positions at all levels, from school governors to MPs. Rochdale club members have taken this on board and are represented in many community positions such as school governors, magistrates and on health groups.
BPW has a great deal to offer its members and is much more than just a network. If you would like to find out what BPW has to offer, just come along to a meeting or contact Susan Smirk on 01706 379409.
