Customer service key to longevity says Rochdale jewellers

Date published: 03 March 2013

An independent Rochdale jewellers - awarded a blue plaque by the council - has outstanding customer service to thank for its continued success according to its owner.

Family-run Butterworth Bros Jewellers has traded from the same Drake Street shop in the town centre for 103 years.

Louise Butterworth, who currently runs the jewellers with husband Bob Stedall, was delighted with the 100% mark they recently obtained from an independent inspector, believing it is to thank for them staying open despite Metrolink work outside their premises.

“It is essential - 100 per cent,” she said.

“That is why we are still here - even with the tram work going on.”

Their ‘Mystery Shopper’, from the Platinum Guild, visited the premises to assess the shop recently - although neither Louise nor Bob were not aware of the visit until their result came back.

In the written report, the mystery shopper praised their friendly nature and good knowledge.

“I found them both to be warm and friendly,” it read.

“She [Louise] seemed extremely knowledgeable about the stock. I would definitely return to this store.”

Butterworth Brothers’ blue plaque, unveiled in the presence of the Mayor, recognises the fact they have occupied the building since 1903 - seven years after it was built.

It makes them the longest-running independent retailer in Rochdale town centre having celebrated their 110th Christmas in Drake Street over the festive period.

The blue plaque follows the recent awarding of a silver plaque - given to anyone in business in Rochdale for 25 years or more.

Louise added: “It has been quite a busy period.”
