£1m investment sees Lab M relocate to Heywood

Date published: 27 November 2012

Lab M, specialists in the development and manufacture of microbiological culture media for the microbiology industry worldwide, has announced a £1m investment at their new Heywood home.

With a turnover of more than £4m and 32 staff, Lab M has been steadily growing in size since the early 70s. A robust and active research and development (R&D) strategy has resulted in an increase in business, with more than half of the organisation’s products being exported.

MD Ian Morris commented: “R&D is the lifeblood of the company, not just to refresh and expand our existing product offering, but most importantly to meet the growing demands of our customers for continual refinement of the testing products and methodologies available to them.”

A move from Lab M’s previous base in Bury to larger facilities at Quest Park, Heywood, assisted by Rochdale Development Agency, has allowed the company to fit out three new laboratories and two manufacturing suites with state-of-the-art equipment. The investment is the biggest in the company’s history and puts Lab M in a good position to compete with multi-billion pound multinational corporations.

John Hudson CEO of Rochdale Development Agency said: “We were happy to help Lab M identify their new home. They are just the sort of modern company that will help sustain the future of the borough with quality employment and business growth.”

The move to Heywood has already allowed Lab M to sign up new distributors of its products in Russia and in the Middle East.
