Casey Group coasts to double success

Date published: 06 November 2012

At Rochdale Business Awards, the Casey Group scored a double success by scooping up not only the Business of the Year Award for businesses with a turnover of over £5 million but also the coveted Environmental Award.

The Casey Group of Companies is a multi-faceted business. Perhaps best known for it plant-hire division which provides heavy-duty machinery and plant to the construction and agricultural industry, it is also involved in building refurbishment, landscaping, environmental and housing developments.

It was founded by Peter Casey 44 years ago and it remains very much a family business with a strong community focus and commitment. It has embraced the Apprentice Scheme enthusiastically, sponsors the Hattersley Under-13 football team and raises money for charities amongst many other things.

Casey takes its environmental work particularly seriously and has supported litter-picking and bulb-planting projects by local schoolchildren. In the wider business context, Casey also provides expert waste-management support to companies
Casey owns and operates Astley Sand and Aggregates at Morley's Quarry, off the East Lancs Road, in Manchester. The site includes inert landfill, extraction of sand and gravel for use as primary aggregates, and recycling of secondary soils and aggregates from construction, demolition and excavation waste.

We spoke to the company-founder’s son, Christopher. He said that he was delighted with the two awards and praised the organisation of the ceremony. “It was a brilliant evening.” he told us. “There were 35 tables and so much talent, enthusiasm and energy in the room. We would also have liked to win the Apprentices Award and we brought two of our own apprentices with us to share a really wonderful evening but we were delighted to see that Smart Electrical; a company that we work closely with, win it instead.

“It is easy for places like Rochdale to fall under the shadow of its larger neighbour, Manchester but this award ceremony really showcases what a diverse and dynamic business-sector the borough of Rochdale has.”
